A Brief History of
The Beeches Property:
A short stroll from Worthing Beach and Town Centre, The Beeches Nursing Home in Wordsworth Road is a stately Victorian building dating back to the region’s marked residential growth in the 1870s and 1880s. The street still displays the red brick and flint characteristic of the Victorian and Edwardian periods (1890–1910).
Gertrude Essex’s 1930 hotel, The May Fair, opened at 45 Wordworth Road, boasting “English meat only” in its publicity material. These documents also advertised the property’s proximity to the sea, its hot and cold water, and its assortment of tables, lawns, and lounges!
In more recent history, 45 Wordsworth Road was known as Mildmay Convalescent Home. The home was purchased in 1985 by Jane Wyatt. She oversaw a series of extensions, modifications, and improvements to the building and retired after operating the home for 38 years.
The Beeches was then purchased by its current owners, the husband and wife team of Nirmal and Jas Chahal, and in 2023, it became part of their group of three family-owned residential care homes.
The property’s primary building maintains its original Victorian features, including high ceilings, architectural moulding, and cornices. The grounds feature a spacious garden room, along with front and back gardens and a terrace patio. Nirmal and Jas have carefully overseen a number of additional refurbishments and updates that enhance the character of the original building while maintaining the facilities for residents.
The Beeches Nursing Home
A standout establishment among care homes in Worthing, The Beeches Nursing Home was established as a place to preserve and cherish the later years of life. Ever since it opened its doors in 1985, The Beeches has been a family-run facility, independently owned and operated. In that time, we’ve cared for residents of many backgrounds with an abundance of stories and life experiences.
As much as possible, we want residents to feel that they’re not leaving their homes at all, but rather, that The Beeches is an extension of their home—one where staff are warm, caring, and always on hand to assist. Friends and family members are welcome to visit at any time.
